17. Read the Signals

The date is nearly over and you're getting mixed signals: they laughed a lot but checked their phone twice; they asked deep questions but mentioned an early morning. Parse the signal from the noise, then choose the closing move.

Constraints

• You may not interrogate them about their signals ('why did you check your phone?'). Clingy is not a closing move.
• Your close must be honest about your interest level.
• They must be left with an easy, pressure-free way to respond either way.

Hints

1. Clusters beat single signals: one phone check means nothing; phone check + short answers + closed posture is a pattern.
2. You can't read minds, but you can control clarity: say what YOU felt and want.
3. A confident, no-pressure close ('I'd love to do this again') wins in every branch: if they're interested, it's an opening; if not, it's graceful.

Signal-reading fails when you weight individual events instead of clusters. A phone check could be an anxious habit, a work thing, or disinterest — alone it's noise. Look for correlated patterns: engagement signals (follow-up questions, callbacks to your stories, lingering when the check comes) versus exit signals (shortening answers, logistics talk, positioning toward the door).
