27. The Counteroffer
Seven weeks after the offboarding, at 11:58pm, the old employer texts: "i miss you. i keep thinking about us. can we talk?" You resigned from this position for reasons. You also, inconveniently, have a chest, and it is currently drafting a formal appeal to reopen negotiations. Evaluate the counteroffer without signing anything in the dark.

wrong answerImmediate reinstatement with zero renegotiation (same role, same manager, same unresolved tickets), the cold 'lol k' (performing an indifference nobody who dated you will believe), or conducting the entire negotiation at 3am (all after-midnight negotiations favor the other party).✗ not delivered
acceptedDaylight, and terms before feelings: "I've thought about us too — I won't pretend otherwise. But I left for reasons, and missing each other isn't the same as those reasons being fixed. If you want to talk about what would actually be different, I'm open to one conversation. If this is just a hard Tuesday night, I understand, and I hope Wednesday is softer. Don't answer until you know which one it is."read 22:09 ✓✓
Constraints
- No negotiations after 11pm. Midnight nostalgia is a market condition, not a signal; whatever this is worth, reprice it in daylight.
- 'I miss you' is data about their evening, not a roadmap for your future. It is also, notably, not an apology, a plan, or an offer.
- One conversation, agenda: what specifically changes. 'Everything' means nothing — a real answer has nouns in it.
- If the old role involved disrespect or worse, this requisition is closed permanently and this problem has no second act. Some positions don't take counteroffers. Know if yours is one before the phone lights up.
Hints
- HR folklore says most people who accept counteroffers are gone again within the year — the raise arrived but the reasons stayed. The folklore is directionally correct about relationships too.
- You resigned for reasons. Reread them before the meeting; nostalgia has a documented tendency to redact the file.
- Wanting to go back and it being wise to go back are independent variables. Feel the first one fully. Decide only on the second.
